O'Neil was in high school when she took part in 2005 for the 3rd Canadian Idol season. Her performance on the show impressed judges, and so she received a promotion to the final 100th stage. O'Neil was praised highly from judges. She suffered significant defeats during the Top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. Her score was in the bottom three, as well as the second place. Judges were shocked by this and instructed the crowd to choose contestants similar to Melissa O'Neil, who had the strongest singing skills. O'Neil has been consistently delivering stellar performance since then, never finished lower than the three top performers. Her two additional performances on September 7,2005, where O'Neil made it to the final two in the finals of the competition, Werner predicted that the morning papers would cover O'Neil's win over Rex Goudie as she became the 3rd Canadian Idol and first female champion. O'Neil's Canadian Idol win was declared by the President Paul Martin immediately.
