O'Grady was born in Wheaton, Illinois, she graduated from the Wheaton North High School in 1981. She is the daughter Jan O'Grady (a Financial planner) and Jim O'Grady. Her family lived in Wheaton and was a student at Wheaton North School. She was a graduate in 1981. Prior to shifting to Los Angeles, she appeared in several commercials. Her first job was an Montgomery Ward model, where she was also featured in several commercials. She appeared in 1988's romantic comedy, She's Having a Baby and was later cast as a recurring part in ABC Drama China Beach, opposite Dana Delany. She also appeared as a guest in several programs. She appeared in both independently produced and made-for-TV movies. Donna Abandando, her first significant role in the ABC cop drama NYPD Blue was the character she played. Her role as the tall blonde squad secretary was in the series from 1993 until 1996. For each of those seasons, she was awarded an Emmy Award in the category for Outstanding Supporting Performance in Drama Series. She was awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award in 1995 for her outstanding performance in an ensemble of actors in an action show.
