Annette Funicello was 13 years old when she was discovered by the studio's head Walt Disney dancing in an amateur production of Swan Lake in Fullerton California. Funicello, to the dismay of other Mickey Mouse Club stars, was added to the cast when the first season had ended and was not required to be auditioned for. Disney's instincts were correct Funicello soon became the most popular Mickey Mouse Club performer. The story she wrote for her own show Adventures in Dairyland also featured her. Annette, however, was not a fan of Funicello singing. Funicello grew to love making albums, and she worked alongside Camerata who was among the few arrangers of forty years old the time, and who understood the fundamentals of early musical styles. The albums she released gradually got better, beginning with the third, Annette Sings Anka, likely the first LP to treat the work of a rock songwriter as an actual repertoire. Funicello appeared alongside Frankie Avalon in Beach Party. The film was the first of a string of beach parties films that were hugely popular.
